Battle of Fragkokastelo

Interactive Representation of battle through virtual reality.

The Battle of Fragokastello in 1828 was one of the most heroic and important conflicts of the Cretan Revolution. Hadjimichalis Dalianis, along with a few revolutionaries, defended the Venetian castle against much larger Ottoman forces, showing tremendous courage and self-sacrifice. Although the battle ended in defeat for the rebels and the death of Dalianis, he was a symbol of bravery and passion for freedom in the local community. The region of Sfakia, known for its libertarian tradition, was psychologically strengthened by this sacrifice, keeping alive the spirit of resistance and unity in the subsequent struggles of Crete.

The exhibit offers an experiential recreation of the Battle of Frangokastello using state-of-the-art audiovisual technologies. The presentation takes place in a short 360° virtual reality (VR) digital animation including an audio narration of the story in Greek and English.

The documentary screened at the museum includes rare photographs and period paintings, incorporating new technologies, 2D and 3D animation, as well as 3D representations of historical figures.
